14 MILE CIRCULAR TRAIL. (CLOCKWISE )
Ordnance Survey Maps: Landranger 125 Explorer 239
NB. This ride has a wide, although not usually deep, river crossing so your horse must be able to ride through water.
Parking and Starting Point:
There is a large car park with plenty of room for horse boxes at Penyffodd, Dyfnant, courtesy of Severn Trent Water. It is situated on the left hand side of the B4395 when travelling from Llangadfan to Pont Llogel ( also known as Llanwyddn ), about one and a half miles from the junction of the B4395 and A458. ( Ordnance Survey grid reference 018 133 ). Within the woodland in which the car park is set are a number of waymarked trails for horseriders. These are known as the Rainbow Trails and leaflets are available at the car park giving details of these rides.
Route Description:
- From the car park take the wide track leading through the forestry on the right hand side of the main entrance driveway. (Alternatively, turn right onto the road and take the signposted bridleway on the right hand side, after about 50 yards, which joins this track further along). Follow the track, which becomes part of Glyndwr’s Way, and continues through the forestry. Keep straight ahead at the two junctions, following the Glyndwr’s Way signs. (These are both five -way junctions and it is important to leave two tracks to the left and one to the right in each case.) A short distance after the second five-way junction ride down the grassy track to the left. At the bottom cross the track and go through the gate ahead. (Grid reference 003 153). Follow the path ahead and then to the right down a rough and stony lane to a stream. Ford the stream and turn right on the road a few yards ahead, and follow this to Conwy.
- Turn right in Conwy and follow the road parallel to the river and over the bridge at Bont Newydd-Conwy, continuing until a road on the right is met, curving away above. Take this, and follow it uphill and then downhill to Peny braich. Just before reaching the cottage, take the signposted track on the left. Go down the track, which is slightly muddy, and when you reach the field at the bottom head up to the gateway to the right. Follow the waymarked route ahead, which turns to the right and eventually runs down through a plantation to meet a road. (Grid reference 044 158).
- Cross over the road and go downhill for about a mile. Look for the stone cottage called Nant y Dwyrhos (grid reference 048 145) and take the signposted track on the right hand side, opposite. Follow this straight ahead and then to the left, crossing a stream beside a footbridge. Follow the track down to the ford. Ride straight across the river and through the gate on the opposite bank, onto a track. The ford is wide, but not usually deep in summer.
- Follow the track past an old cottage. Keeping the fence line on the right, carry on along the track and through a number of gates until eventually the track becomes tarmaced. ( Grid reference 036 137 ). Ride straight on here and then at the T junction go through the gate which is straight ahead and continue along the track. At the next gate go through the shallow stream and over to the hedge on the left. At the next boundary take the middle gateway and the most definite track. Follow this to the road. Turn right and follow this back to the car park at Penyffordd.
