11 Mile Circular Trail (ANTI-CLOCKWISE)
Ordnance Survey Maps: Landranger 125 Explorer 239
N.B. In order to complete this ride it is essential that your horse will walk through water as there is a wide river crossing, although it is not usually deep. There is also a fairly steep downhill section.
Parking and Starting Point:
There is a large car park with plenty of room for horse boxes at Penyffodd, Dyfnant, courtesy of Severn Trent Water. It is situated on the left hand side of the B4395 when travelling from Llangadfan to Pont Llogel ( also known as Llanwyddn ), about one and a half miles from the junction of the B4395 and A458. ( Ordnance Survey grid reference 018 133 ). Within the woodland in which the car park is set are a number of waymarked trails for horseriders. These are known as the Rainbow Trails and leaflets are available at the car park giving details of these rides.
Route Description:
- From the car park ride back to the B4395 and turn right. Within a few yards take the next small road on the left. After about a mile, where the road takes a sudden right angled turn to the right, take the minor road to the left, which goes gradually uphill. After about half a mile the tarmac ends at a gate. Pass through the gate and follow the track ahead, which eventually meets a small tarmac road. Continue straight across, through the gates, and follow the track which goes gradually uphill and then descends quite steeply, eventually becoming a tarmac road. At the next road junction turn left, then left again at the next junction on to the B4383, and go over the bridge across the River Vyrnwy into Dolanog.
- After crossing the bridge take the next turning on the right, which is signposted ‘Car Park’ ( grid reference 065 128 ). Follow the lane up to a gate and go through onto the track beyond. Keep to the main track and ignore the track going off to the right. Go through the next gate and bear left where the track forks. ( grid reference 076 135 ). Follow the track to a farmyard, Ty mawr, going through to join a small tarmac road. Follow this road to a T junction with a grass triangle, and turn right.
- Take the next turning on the left ( grid reference 076 154 ). The road becomes a track and follow it through several gates for about a mile until it joins another tarmac road. Turn left and at the next T junction turn right. After a quarter of a mile take the track on the left, opposite a stone cottage called Nant y dwyrhos. ( Grid reference 048 145 ). Follow this track straight ahead, and then around to the left to cross a stream beside a small footbridge. Follow the track alongside the river bank, and down to the ford. Ride straight across the river and through the gate on the opposite bank, onto a track. The ford is wide, but not usually deep in summer.
- Follow the track past an old cottage. Keeping the fence line on the right, carry on along the track and through a number of gates until eventually the track becomes tarmaced. ( grid reference 036 137 ). Ride straight on here and then at the T junction go through the gate which is straight ahead and continue along the track. At the next gate go through the shallow stream and over to the hedge on the left. At the next boundary take the middle gateway and the most definite track. Follow this to the road, and then turn right back to the car park at Penyffordd.
